OTAKI SUFFERS FROM GALE
MARKET GARDENS DAMAGED Otaki suffered heavily in the southerly storm which swept the district on Friday night and Saturday morning. Serious damage was wrought in the commercial gardens, crops receiving a severe buffeting. The cost of the damage to the gardeners is estimated at £3000. The wind brought down telephone wires and disrupted communication with Wellington. Connections could not be made for a time and then only urgent calls were accepted. Heavy rain accompanied the wind, a total of 3.63 inches being recorded. On Thursday night there were 88 points of rain, on Friday 2.65 inches and on Saturday 12 points. This rainfall is probably a record for any similar periocl in the month of February. Despite the heavy rain there was very little flood water at Rangiuru, but a fair quantity on Tasman Road. No damage, however, is reported there.
