RAILWAY RETURNS SHOW OPERATIONAL LOSS

WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. An operating loss of £105,659 was incurred by the New Zealand Railways during the four weeks ended January 4, wliich included the busy holidav traffic period. Tfie revenue for the four weelts amounted to' £1,069,130 and the expenditure to £1,174,789. The total loss on railway operations was £161,748, but this Was 'reduced to £105,659 by net revenue of £56,089 earned by miscel1'aneous and subsidiary services operated by the Railways Department. For the period of the current financial year from .April 1 last to January 4, tliere was an operating loss of £280,096. Reve-nue for that period amounted to £11,625,711 and expenditure to £11,905,807. All railway ser vices showed an operating loss, which totalled £676,216. The loss on the North Island main line and branches was £221,626, that on the South Island main line and branches £435,046, and that on tlie Nelson line £19,545. The net revenue from miscellaneous and subsidiary services was £396,120. The capital cost of open lines as at March 31 last was £74,466,731.
