Uonipton was included only when Smith becanie ill. Ile looked set for his fifth suceessive lirst class centurv when he played a crossbat stroke to a fulltosser .just af'ter a new ball was taken. The other batsmen were stodgy and uninspiriirg, waiting generally for un occasional loose ball. Compton, l'requently yanls down the wicket, drove, cut and pulled daringlv. Fisli- , loek, the opener, rarely played a foreing sliot, seoring 51 in 151 minutes. Ikin was dogged but was missed three times. The bowling was fairly good. Tribe, seeking another trial in a test, was doing better than the figures indicate. Ile had 18 suceessive overs at oue stage. Johnson split a finger and bruised a hand eatching Gibb, was unable to bowl and left the field. Scores: — EXGLAND. First Innings.
