PRICE OF EGGS

. Poultrymen Want Further Increase Local poultry-keepers are not satisfied with the increase in • the price of eggs granted recently by the Stabilisation Commission. They claim that a further increase is necessary . in view of the present high cost of f eed and the in^erruption in production due to the uncertainty of supplies. \ A special meeting, estimated to be the largest held by poultrymen in this district, was held recently. The principle subjects of debate were the retail price of eggs and the recent price offered wheat growers. The president of the Levin Registered Poulty-Keepers' Association, Mr. A. W. Parton, presided and after formal business was discussed, gave details of the recent increases in selling prices of eggs, but those present said they did not feel that the industry had been given a "fair deal" and the- following motion was carried: "That the increase granted by Stabilisation Commission does not- cover the added cost of present food supplies, and that- we press for further increases owing to this fact and to the varying quality of the food supplies having a direct effect on production." Discussion followed concerning future supplies of wheat and what was deemed the failure of the Government to meet the farmer so that

sufficient acreage cuiuu ue suw n. notion was carried on the followLng lines: "That this meeting of Levin Registered Poulty-Keepers views with grave concern the price Dffered the wheat grower of 7s 4d a bushel. This price does not appear to guarantee sufficient acreage being sown, and further requests the Wellington Provincial Council to take up. with the Poultry Board and the Government the luestion of encouragement to the wheat farmer to ensure -greater production for the Dominion's requirements." . , , Mr. Parton was again appomted the association's delegate to the Wellington provincial council, which will hold its annual meeting on February 19 at Palmerston North. , When discussing the recent election of members to the New Zealand Poultry Board, Mr. Parton said that four producer-members were required and on a preliminary count both the Auckland and Wellington provinces had elected new members. Canterbury's member was returned unopposed._ To date no report had been received from 3J:ago. The board is composcd jfour elected members and two Government nominees, at the moment one from the North Island and one from the South Island.
