Life-saving Display Arrangements have been made.by the Foxton Surf and Life-saving Club to send two teams to Waitarere Beach on Sunday afternoon and if the weather is suitable- they will give two demonstrations. Heat Through Window ' A window blind in a house at Hamilton caught fire through the: sun shining on a leadlight in front of which the blind was hanging. The angle of the sun apparently tuxned the window into a magnifying glass. Smoke from the smouldering blind attracted attention before it burst into flames. During recent days the temperature in I Hamilton has been high, ranging from '80 to '86 degrees in the :shade. Costly Voting •Comment on the high cost -of voting was made by seyeral members «of the Auckland Transport Board when figures relating to a recent by-election in the N.o. .3 'Constituency were referred to the meetang. From the 32,000 electors only 2465 votes were recived, which represented 7.7 per eent. of the number eligible to vote. The cost of the election was £277, or '2s 3d for each vote cast. ' Petrol Burns Man's Leg "When he was burning back grass from a pile of . timber at Palmerston North on Saturday, Mr. J. E. Nash, of Palmerston North, received severe burns to one leg. It appears that he used "petr-ol to assist him with the burnfng and' poured it around the grass. On lighting a match the petrol around him immediately burst into flames,' his legs being burned' before he could make his escape. Hunt For Wapiti 1 Equipment for an expedition ; from the Harvar-d University Mus-eu-m, which is .coming to New Zealand to obtain specimens of wapita for reseai-ch and study., has arrived in Auckland from New York. The. expedition, which is headed by' Colonel John Howard, will arrive at Auckland about the middle of next week. They will assemble at- Invercargill and will travel to the remote country at the head of Lake Te Anau and .spend about tent days hunting wapiti. , Levin's Hottest Day The beautiful summer weather oif the past two weeks reached its climax yesterday with the hottest day yet experienced. Whvle the people of Bri'taih were freczing in' 26 degreqs Fahrenheit, the citizens of Levin sweitered in a temperature of .81 degrees in -the shade. Wednesday was the next hottest day, the mercury xeaehing 7£ in the shade. Welcome rain feH las't night and today, and will .have a very! beneficial effect on parched gar-j > dens and pastures.
