Four liundred cuttle specially selec.ted by the Ilerd hnproveinent Society for building up deciinated Chinese milking lierds, will be loaded in the I 7(i()()-ton Anierican steamer LindenU'ood Victory, at Auckland ne.vt week. I The-consignment, which has been purj chased by Lnrra, is believed to be the largest shipment of cattle ever to be exported from this port. Tlie LindenI wood Victory arrived at Lyttelton from ( tShanghai on Tuesday to load 1000 j sheep and she will leave for Auckland probahly on klonday to pick up the reniainder of her large cargo of liveI stock. The 400 cattle are still waiting 011 farm lands of Ihe . Waikato and Taranaki and Wellington provinces and tliev will be brought to Auckland as soon as the steamer arrives, although most of the stock will eonie f roni, the Auckland province. A special train will be used to- bring the animals from the south. An official of the Depart ment of Agriculture stated that tlie animals are all pedigree bulls and heifers with good butterfat backing, selected by the Iierd Improvement Society and subjeeted to a tesl 6y the livestock division. - The cattle wil; ultimately be distributed by Unrra to Agrieultural colleges and Universities for breeding purposes in the devastated areas.
