NO MORE ENGLISH CUPS AND SAUCERS
WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. Tn order to proteet ioeal industry, the Govermnent has reeeiitlv issued legislation curtailing the iniportation of erorkerv froni Englaml by an order gazetted on January :{() and made puolic yesterday. The iniportation of uiule (torated eups and saucers, unless part oi 'a eomplete dinuer or 'tea set, is pro Hibited. The terms of the order, ae eording- to a manufacturers agent, are as yet nebulous and its demands uneertain. As far as he understood, New Zealand agents of English crockery manufacturers are prevented from j ordering further supplies of plain cups and saucers. Cups and saucers were manufactured in Auckland but these, he said, were generaily considered pf inferior design and workmanship. Temuka ware from the South Island coin- ' pared favourablv with its English counterpart m all but price. The wholesale cost of plain English cups and saucers was 14s ld a dozen. The wliolesale price of the South Island cups alone was 24s a dozen. So far saucers had not been manufactured.
