It is- estimated that this vear about £40,000,000 worth will go up I in cigarette and pipe snioke and it all ; comes from the United States loan. People are smoking more than before the war. In 1938, about 72,000,000 ounces of cigarette and 736,000,000 1 ounces of pipe tobacco were smoked. The estimated ligures^ for this vear j are cigarette 102,000,000 and pipe tobacco 980,000,000 ounces. , When the subject was discussed in ' the House of Comnfons recently, it was stated that filnis and tobacco aiiiounted j to 40 per cent. of Britain 's imports I from America, and that tobacco eonj sumption was now 130 per cent. of the I pre-war figure. j In rcply to qvestions, The Chancellor | of the Excliequer (Dr. Dalton) indicatj ed that little could be done about it, | otlier, perhaps, than a national appeal 1 „o oconoaiise, parlicularly 011 tobacco. 1 Referring to filnis, l.e indic^ted that the position would remain much the same until British productions inereased.
