v\ loljLliNG'iUiN, T eu. y. Two men doniinated the New Zeaiuud grass track cycl'ing chaxnpionslups netu at the 4>asin Reserve on Saturdav. They were E. Hughes ^AucKls.'nd) and L. Loclc (Canterbury) senior and junior champions respectiveJv. The veteran Hughes was head and shouhiers above the otlier seniors and compteted 'the triple by winning the half-mile, niile and three miles cliam- ; pumships. The half-mile was a great rac'e. Hughes, who has been riding since 1932, possessed that little extra strength to earry him over the line half a wheel ahead of his team mate, P. Coker. With a ifurlong to go in the niile, llughes jumped his field and withheld a strong challenge from A. H. Allen ( WesL Ccast, Nortli Island). Hughes was never prominent in the ' threiEniiles till about a furlong from home when he started to move through the field. Ile never actually hit the iront till about 40 yards from the line. Then he outrode W. Williams (Wellington) to win in Sniin. 2sec. It was a beautifully judged race and probably Hughes' greatest triumph of the dav. Outstaiiding among the juniors was the well biult L. Loclc. He impressed as a coniing national champion with his stylish and powevful cycling. In 1945 Lock was a novice rider and in 1946 he won the junior title in Canterbury.
He showed wouderful improvemeiit and j won the New Zealand junior half-mile , •title la'st vear. Ile followed this up by | winning the 25-mile road racc title in j Canterbury. He has been competing 1 against seniors and beating them. He gave a taste of his abilitv when he won • the three miles points race on (Saturdav, competing against seniors. He had 110 trouble in gaining an easy victory. Th.is race was nt the fmish of a verv slreiuious dav and Loclc rode a remark- . ab'fy lieady race for a junior. The national road cycling champion, 1 T. Carter (Nelson) did not inipress as a track cyclist and lookecl his best in the teams pursuit race inVhich'hc rode., ; f'or Wellington. Wellington 's team | work iu this race was one of the feat- j . ures of the nieeting. 1 A crowd estimated at 300 watched the nieeting. Conditions were perfect. This was the first all-out cycling cliampionship nieeting arranged by the Ne^v Zmaiand Amateur Cycling Association. Desults: — -HOvds (Pennington Cup): R. Me-F'-iugall ( Otug'o) 1, L.
