WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. The inhux of now blood into the postsectional play of tlie, singies and pairs competitions, is a feature of the 32nd annual championship tournament of the Nevv Zeaiand Bowling Association now in its secoiul week at Wellington. Tlie oxily player ieft in botli singies and pairs is Exelby (Frankton Junction; vvlio tliough a topline player, has never shown sucli brilliaxice as he has tliis week. No former singies chaxnpion is lncluded in the six prayers reinaining ixi the singies though White (Eunangaj is a skip of chaxnpion fours. Hauorth (Oanterbury) who was skipper of tlie winniug pair in 1930 and winning four in J935 anda .1937, has still a chance of annexing the pairs a second time. Arinstrong (Lunaaga), N.o. 3 of the present chaxnpion four, is still in the pairs. The only two-lifers left are Freeth (Maitai) xn the singies and Martin Williams (Edgeware) iu the pairs. The lifth day of the tournament brought brilliant bowling weather. Play was distributed between the Karori, Thorndon, Hataitai and Hutt gi-eens. A last niinute decision resulted in the transfer of the singies from the Wellington greens to Karori, the Wellington greens having" sulfered wear and tear. Singies Section. Wlieii singies play startdd on Saturday uiorning, the field, contained three two-lifers and 17 one-lifers. The twolifers were Skoglund and Freeth and Buchan. In tlie lirst round Skoglund beat Buchan, proving liimself the more versatile player. Buchan has a Dominion wide reputation for his drawing but
he had to contend not only with an exponent of the draw sliot but also Avith an expert driver. Skoglund killed two or three times. Buehan led at the- 9th end 9 — 3 but his opponent left him stranded at that score for five ends and tlie game finished 21 — 12. ' After the other two-lifer, Freeth, liaci elinxinated JMurdoch (Otahuhu) who was third in the national singies at Auckland two yeai-s ago, he met Skoglund fresh from his win over Buchan. This was perhaps the most thrilling match of the day. Freeth, who has a war disability, confessed tliat he came Lo Wellingtou hoping for a few games at least but not expecting to go the distaxice he has. However, he has had outstaiiding suecess in Nelson, especi ally in singies, and proved vvhat con I'entratiou can do Deliberate iu tht exlreme he certainly drew soxne brii liant shots against the Otahuhu mai). Boih gave hue exhibitions though Skog lund was out of touch with his driving r rectli led on the 19th end l(i — 15. Tht 20th was the last head played and wa. excitiiig. throughout. Skoglund was lying snugly on the kitty with Freeth 's three bowls close by. With his last bowl Freeth played a beautiful draw whicii just timed his opponent 's shot and gave Freeth the full quota of foux shots, leaving the score 20 — 15, and making it impossible for Skoglund to, win. Now a one-lifer, Skoglund met Buchan a second time. In this match he drove vcry rareiy, once killing the head. On the 13th 'end he played Buchan 's owh dtawing game and won 19—11. Among the one-lifers, Franks, Ba. uioral "s 1939 singies axid fours cliamplon, beat Evans (Maranui) who has won the Hawke's Bay centre singies .•liaiiipionslnp on two occasxous, but was tiiexi eJiminated by Hindle (Balmacavan) by the narrow margin of 10 — 15. riixidte eventually fell an easy victim Lu Vella 7 — 25. The draw for ppst-section play in tlie hampion singies, to be arranged as op portunily oft'ers is: Anton plays the win uor of White and Exelby and that win nor plays Freeth, the only two-lifer ieft and Vella plays Skoglund.
Pairr Section. The accommodation at the Thorndon green was inadequate for the crowd wiiich attended to see the two-lifers vontest their section of the pairs. This section was domiuated by Martin and \Vimaius (Edgeware) who are the only two-lxfe pair left in. Williams is oue jf tlie most consistoxit skips in Canter>)ury and has been chanipion of cham,,ions in Christchurch twice. He has .juexi noted for his steadiness which >vas never more ixi evidonce than yes.fcrday. He is a cool player an.l .iandles his team wiscly J.nd agreeab.iy tiiS lead. Martin, reveals "iuc.'h of the uncanny skill of his brother, the late ungk's chaxnpion, who was a member )f the same club. In the lirst round..esterday Williams met a one-life pair ncluded to make the draw, Adams and i>acey (Avon-Stratford) and won 27—12. Huiston and llaworth (Canterbury) provided close opposition in the second round. After being 1(5 al! on the 19th Haworth took the lead with a two on the 20th but Williams got four at the iiist head. Throughout tlie day it had been thought that llavvkin's and Exelby 's pair might prove invincible but again Williams achieved victory by 21 — 18. Among the one-lifers on the Hutt green, Marwick and Lambess (Whargarei) were the only oxies to eom-i ..hrough. They eliminated in turn Keys and NlcAneny (Wellington) 21 — 17, Payne and Morris (Frankton) 21 — 14, C'airns and Gieeson_ (Dunedin) 31 — 1) and linally vanquished easily Burd and I Barrow (Beatoun) who has won liigh respeet for their performances in eliminating Fepper and Wadsworth (Uppei Hutt) IS — 14, Macklow and Eobertsoxi (Onehunga) 24 — 20 and Hobern and Aniold (Maitai) 23 — 19.
In this section an Onehunga fou* were in opposition, George and Livingstone, former New Zeaiand singies and fours champion, going down before iheir team mates Macklow and Kobertson 23 — 21. One of-the best eontested, pairs games in the Karori section was betweeii Tood and Fleming (Newtown) anxf Yugovich and Henrv (Sydenham). Botli ■ikips are police sergeants in their respective districts; The game resulted in a tie on the 2is]t end 18 — all, Henry
— - ; getting the winning sh'ot on the extra end. Todd, who was lead for Fleming, was junior singies chaxnpion in Wellington last year ad semi-lialist in the Wellixxgton Centre champions of champions contest. O'ullen (Thorndon) runner-up in the 1940 pairs, and his lead Boon, had an easy win over the Poverty Bay pair Eobinson and Somervell a member of the New Zeaiand Bowling Oouneil. One outstanding pair gt Karori were Christian and Eeid (Masterton) who ac counted for Yugovich and Henry and xater Manning and Be'nson (Balmoral). Benson was No. 3 in Franks ' chaxnpion four of 1939. The other outstanding pair was Faulkner and Webb (Paeroa) who beat Tucker and yorenson (Carterton) and MeCormick and Bquire (Hawera), the skip being a former singies champion, and in the third ronnd after the hardest of battles, Hampton and Healey (Gonville). At Hataitai, the two -Thomases (Ohakune) of whom a surpfise could be ex pected, fell in the third round to Lineexi and McCullough (Carterton) who had won single point victories over James and Eolls (Featherston) and tbe Fullers of Waitara. Aruistrong and K. Y. Shirley survived .three rounds. The draw for the championship pairs in the post-sectional play to be played as developments in the fours permit, is as follows: — First round, JMart'in and Williams (two-lifers) a bye; McDonald and Brighting play Christian and Eeid, Faulkner and Webb play Hawkin auci Exelby; Percy and Frederieks play Huiston and Haworth.
