SQUATTERS FIGHT AIR FORCE
MELEE OVER OCCUPATION OF CAMP HUT Received Sunday, 7 p.m. BRISBANE, Feh. 9, Fire hoses, rifle hutts, axes and knives, were used iast night during a battle between squatters and R.A.A.F. guards; at Victoria Park -Air Force Station, Brishane. At one stage the squatters captured an Air Force guard and held * bim as hostage until R.A.A.F. ofncera . agreed to let them occupy an empty hut in the camp. ^ The hattie began when twelve meu tried to move a family into an unoccupied but. Two. men injured were a sqaatcer aua uonaia naas, uistnct Gommunist party chairman. The squatters ciaim that guards hit the men with rifle butts and that a guard 's bayonet gashed Haas' hand. The sejuatters carried axes -and knives. when tney sent for help. more than 50 peopie who have occupied the huts in the camp, arrived as reinforcements. The guards turned a hose on one party which tried to force an entrance. The squatters surrounded Ihe guard and one man slashed the nose with a knife. The squatters- s.eized oi e guard. Tha police were summoned to the scene and later an R.A.A.F. officer permitted the occupation of the hut. There are now more than 150 squatters comprising more than 100 families in the camp.
