WARNING TO N.Z. WORKERS
Received Sunday, 7.0 p.m. NGW YORK, Feb. 8. In the first nnrnher oi' the monthly rnagazine United Nations ■ World, 3farc Oreene, in a snrvey entitled 4£New Zealand Advanees Under Labour, " says l,al)our to which New Zealand tnrned in desperatioj), has correeted the state of disrei)ute tb which democraey had J'allen in New Zealand. Referring to the various benefits introduced by Labour and discussing housing, JVIr. Oreene says, in eontrast -with the recent Saturday Evening Bost article, that each house is different in design, with modern satiitation and elect rieal eonvenienees familiar to Americans. The dreary monotony of standardised houses, eharaeteristie of most workers' dwellings in other eountries and evident iu New Zealand a generation ag'o, has now disappeared entirely. "The Lominion worker is housed as not even in United States while his Government sees to it that he never becomes indigent," Mr. -Oreene adds. He also says that the tenure of the Labour Government over an indefinite ])eriod would seem to depend o.n its eonsideration of the rights and welfare of all the people. The Laboui Government has alienated several sections and at present laeks a sai'e working majority. He contends that this is the result of pemiitting, even sometimes eneouraging', the worker to cai-ry on with a high hand aggressively and militantly, overriding and disregarding in many ways not only the comfort and welfare of the eommunity but also the stability of the nation itself. One deplorable evidence of this is that New Zealand 's eun eney is either entirely unaeeeptable abroad or subject to large discounts. This signifies laek of eonfidence abroad in the New Zealand Labour Government. Failure of the Government to put its house in order will ultimately mean the lo,ss oi' pn other golden oppoi'tunity to make reforin, liberal government, and true democraey a suece^s. Mr. Grecne concludes that everything will be lost and the loss to liberaMsm generally will be great if 'New Z.ealancl is permitted to, becoine a paradise for the worker and somethjng quite the con- ' trary- for the rest of the population.
