SOCIAL TO MR. LOWRY
DECISION OF PUBLIC MEETING The public of Shannon and surrounding distri'cts were well represented at a meeting held in Laurvig's Hall on Wednesday evening, when, at the invitation of the Mayor, Mr. R. E. Downes, they gathered to discuss the arranging of a complimentary social as a mark of appreeiation for the work which they had done for the district during the eight years which Mr. Lowry had served p's member of Parliament in the Otaki electorate, of which Shannon was then a part. On opening the meeting, Mr. Downes stated that both Mr. and Mrs. Lowry had given much of their time to assist the town and district, land it was the desire of the public generally that some recognition be made of their services. In moving a motion that a social evening be extended to Mr. and Mrs. Lowry, Mr. J. Curran remarked on the loyal manner in which Mr. Lowry had carried out his duties as a member of 'Parliament. Mr. S. H. Roberts stated that it gave him very much pleasure to second the motion, as Mr. Lowry had done much for the district and had carried out his dufcies in a very fair and able manner. Others present also spoke in high praise of Mr. and Mrs. Lowry. | It was decidcd that the evening take the form of a dance togelher with musical and vocal numbers, which will be held in the Druids' | Hall on Thursday, February 20. Messrs. Guy (Tokomaru) and Simpson (Opiki) stated that if no similar function was to be arranged in their districts, they would combine with the Shannon function. Arrangements were then put in hand for the function. It was movcd that Mr. J. T. Bovis, on behalf of the committee, extend invitations to the Prime Minister, the member for the district (Mr. M. H. Oram, M.P.), and the ehairmen of the Horowhenua County Council, the Horowhenua Electric Power Board and the Manawatu County Council to be present. Those present at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) , Messrs. J. T. Bovis, J. D. Campbell, R. Johnson, R. R. Lind, J. Curran, )H. Norris, R H. Charter, D. Harris, S. H. Roberts, G. McEwen, Mesdames W. R. Clough, M. A. Pedersen, W. Third, Tremewan, Marshall, Thorne, J. A. Easton; Harris, Picard, Mr. and Mrs. G. Simpson (Opiki) and Mr. R. Guy (Tokomaru) . Apologies for absencc were rec'eived from Messrs. R: J. Law, C.
