Hiree Two-Lifers And 17 One-Lifers Left

WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. • Only one foraier champion, W. C. Franks (Balmoral), who has one life, remains in the New Zealand championship singles at the Dominion bowling tourney following today's play. Three previous champions, J. M. Squire (Ha- , wera), F. Livingston (Onehunga) and W. D. Bennett (Hastings), were elinxinated. Three two-lifers and 17 one-lifers Vill contest the final day 's play on Sat- ' urday. The two-lifers are T. T. Skoglund (Otahuhu), W. Freeth (Maitai) and J. B. Buchan (Balmacewan). Notable among the one-lifers still in are F. White (Runanga), skip of last year's champion four, J. M. Giles (United), F. G. Hazlewood (Lyall Bay), S. Vella (Onehunga) who finished in the first five iast year. Other remaining one-lifers are C. H. Clinkard (St. Johns), E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), E. E. Somervell (Poverty Bay), M. Marsack (Ponsonby), L. G. Goodacre (Napier), W. Smce (Okato), T. W. Gee (Hutt), H. G. Kingsland (Nelson), A. Murdoch (Otahuhu), T. Anton (Helensville), I. B. Evans (Omarunui), T. R. Hindle (Balmacewan). Of the (520 bowlers who started in the singles on Tuesday, 375 were eliminated that night. At the end of the second day of the singles play today the field had been reduced to 17 one-lifers ji.nrl thrfifi twn-lifers.

The second day's play in the pairs will take place tomorrow and ,if the weather is favourablo, the 390 pairs remaining will have been reduced to 8 two-lifers and 48 one-lifers by tomorrow night. The two-lifers will play on the Thorndon green and the one-lifers on the Karori, Hataitai and Hutt greens cominencing at 9 a.m. Saturday. When Squire met W. J. Cogswell (Darfield) in the singles this afternoon, the latter quietly found touch and established a commanding lead which lie maintained throughout. Splendid driving contributed to Gee's victory by one point over T. L. Williams (Paeroa) in the fourth round. He killed several heads when badh- placed. Playing most consistently W. Freeth (Maitai) led 14 — 7 on the 15th head against J. M. Giles (United). An unfortunate trail by the latter on the next end gave his opponent four making the scores 18 — 7. Freeth failed to | score on the next four euds, the score standing at 18 — 15 in his favouf. When the final began Giles, requiring four to win and three to tie, secured two. E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction) , lost his first life to Skoglund in the fourth round, the latter eariv establishi ing a lead and holding it throughout. : F. White, skip of the champion Runanga four last year, beat his No. 3, J. Armstrong, 17 — 16 on the Khandallah green in the third round. Halfway the scores were 8 — all, the match continuing elose with the scores 14 — all on the 18th en,d. Whitp, got pne.and i).rnxstropg two, making the scores 16 — 15 for Armstrong on the 20th end. In a thrilling , finish White secured two heads to win by one point. In the fourth round White met T. H. Hale (.Takapuna). They were 7 — all ; on the 10th fiead, 9 — all on the 13th, J 10 — all on the 15th. Hale got one more i on the 16th, White 2 on the 17th. A ; 4 by White on the 18th virtually settled the issue. White led 16 — 14 on i the 20th. On the .last head White drew on the kitty and Hale put up fast ones but failed to disturb the bowls, White , winning 17 — 14. F. Hazelwood (Lyall Bay) had a hard tussle with W. M. Pepper (:St. Johns) in the third round but earned his one point win. W. D. Bennett (Hastings) lost his single remaining life in the third round being clirninated by T. R. Hindle (Balmacewan) 17 — 11. Livingstone won his first match oi the day comfortably but lost his re--.xair;ng two lives in successive games, both being keenly contested. T. L. Arnott (Palmerston North), a member of the N.Z. Bowling C'lub, haO a close contest with'T. G. Fox (Christchurch) whom he beat after an extra end 16 — 15. Another member to suffer defeat or the Kelburn green was J. R. fSmith (Christchurch) who met A. Glengarry (Wanganui). Glengarry passed iSmitl; t'or the lirst time on the 13th and weni on to win 18 — 13. Glengarry plaved splendid bowls and displayed a fightinr spirit. In his match with Franks, Glen garry frequently failed to reach tlu . kitty.
