i r Infectious Diseases Seven cases of notifiable infectious diseases were reported by the Department of Health in the Wel-lington-Hawke's Bay health district during last week. These comprise one case of scarlet fever, two of diptheria, two of -tuberculosis and two of undulant fever. No deaths were reported. Film Institute . I Delegates from film societies throughout New Zealand, at a conI f erence in Wellington, formed a i New Zealand Film Institute whose 'principal aims are to facilitate the handling of non-commercial films •in an endeavour to increase the existing supply of 16 mm. film. Dr. A. R. Ellis, Dunedin, was elected president and Mr. Gordon Mirams chairman of the working committee. * i Eel Cannery Over haif a ton of eels was the catch secured by one flsherman operating in the Taramakau River, it is reported from Hokitika, but since this catch was lifted subsequent hauls have been disappointing. Fishermen in all - parts of South Westland have been fishing, for and trapping eels since the eel canning- factory at Hokitika commenced operatfons. Some fishermen are constructing a net that will completely span the Mahinapua Creek. Show Successes Compecing at;the Feilding A, and F. Association's show yesterday, Mr, G. H. Vickers, of Levin, gained first place with Lady Grey in the hunters' competition of the section for saddle horses. Another of his horses, Merrylegs, secured third place in the class for mare or geldings over 13,3 hands and h(jt exceeding 14.2 hands, and was v.h.c. in the class for best groomed, best mannered and best paced pony over 13.3 hands and not exceeding 14,2 hands. Fewer Cars The number of motor vehicles Iicensed at December 31 last (that is, at the end of the first six months Qf the current licensing year) was 319,775. This was announced by the Postmaster-General (Mr. Hackett) who added that the figures were 13,489 (or 4.4 per cent.) in excess of those for the corresponding date in 1945. The number of cars Iicensed, 197,594, shows a aecrease of 564 (or 0,28 per cent, on last year's figures) . Commercial vehicle licenses, however (105,95ll, are higher by 12,768 (or 13.7 per cent.) . Motor cycle licenses, 16,230 show an increase of 1285, or 8.6 per cent.

Extra accommod8(mn has to be provided for the sheep and pigs. Th^re are over 100 dogs entered in the kennel section. The grand parade will eclipse all previous efforts and will include a special display by eight beauti'ful draught horses owned by Mr. Roy Craig, of Glen Oroua. The show will be open both hights. On Tuesday evening tbe Tahoraiti Maoris v/ill give a unique variety entertainment and the Ruahine- Pipe Band a display, while on Wednesday there will be spectacular interhouse marching events. For thoss v-ho are not yet members, tickets are stiU avaiiable at a cost of only £1 for all privileges, The quality of the rams to be sold at the fair on 'ihur-sday should attract b'uyers from all parts of Hawke's Bay and ^ other districts.
