Comp-' ton and Hafdstaff took control ffoni the Australian fcoWlers1 after' a hafd fight in the morning session when they in turn plaVed delightfui erick'et. When Hard staff was dismissed after lunch the paii nad put on 118 rUus for the fifth wicket. Hardstaff scored fifty in 111 min utes, which is the Jastest half centufj by any player for the innings. With the dismissal of Hardstaff Coniptou and Ikin set a merry paee, hil ting out strongly to- run up 61 in 45 minutes. Compton had reaehed 50 iftei batting 158 minutes, and he rea'-oed his century, his first in this test series, m 232 minutes, hitting 9 feurs. Comp ton's e'entury was chanceless and easily his best knoclt so far for the tohr.. The Australian fieldifig sluniped slightly under tl]h battering by Comp ton and Ikin.
