WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

ONixaaw AHViiNvr The novel idea of a committee oi members being set up for the daj to entertain as their guests thc regular committee and officers oi the Shannon Women's Institute was again adopted this year for the January meeting, this method having become an annual fixture. Mrs J. Creagh was in the chair and Mrs D. Fitzgerald acted as secretary Mesdames Radford, Tremewan and Bell were the hostesses. Mrs. Creagh, speaking on behali of the members, expressed appreciation of the work done by the officers and committee throughout the year and hoped that they would relax and let the others do the work for this meeting. Mrs. Creagh then asked the regular president, Mrs. J. A. Easton, tc accept a lovely bouquet. A„dainty lavender sachet was also handed to each committee member. In her reply, Mrs. Easton expressed sincere thanks to the members for their excellent co-operation and kindness. Mrs. Easton also thanked the day's committee for the delightful and interesting programme they had arranged and expressed the committee's thanks for the dainty gifts. Members decided that in future each should bring a cake of soap to the meetings to be handed over to the Red Cross for dispatch to Britain. At the same timo members may bring suitable foodstuffs if they so desire. During the afternoon many interesting competitions were helc, I the winners being Mesdames W. j Radford, Veale, Bovis and Marjorv jAdrian, who was a visitor from Dannevirke. Miss Joan Radford ! entertained with a number of j delightful elocutionary items, vhich were greatly appreeiated by those present. To add to the gaiety of the afternoon, the meeting room was decorated witn I masses of lovely flowers. The hostesses provided a most enjoyable afternoon tea. The usual monthly competitions were held and the results were as follows: Bloom, Mrs. Tremewan 1, Mrs. A. Richards 2, Mrs. Swindlejhurst 3; cluster, Mrs. Creagh 1, iMrs. Tremewan 2 and Mrs. J. Smclair 3; shrub, Mrs. J. A. Easton 1; Christmas cake, Mrs. D. Roberts 1, Mrs. Tremewan 2; thrift article, Mrs. Sinclair 1.
