WIDE RANGE OF FARMING

STOCK AND HORTICULTURE MASSEY COLLEGE EXHIBIT Many points in modern sheep and dairy husbandry, and horticulture, are brought out in a comprehensive display by Massey Agricultural College at the Horowhenua show, which opened today. This colourful exhibit is proving of great interest to both town and country people. An arresting diagram, which should' appeal to dairy farmers, shows how a straight-forward and unchanging shed routine, with a mini'mum of delay, results in satisfactory milking and maximum yields. In addition to this study of milk secretion, there are some pointers towards a solution of the problem of breeding and selection for. higher production in the herd. fhis is through use of those bulls capable of transmitting superior hereditary characteristics to their progeny. The fact that a bull may be the son of a cow which has produced 5001b of fat in a season is stated to be no guarantee of his breeding worth. Wool faults, hereditary and acquired, are shown in a large cabinet. Much interest has been taken in a book of wool samples such as are gathered together in project form by each of the.sheepfarming and professional woolclassing students at the college. This book becomes the student's own property and is invaluable for eference over the years. Work in the commercial and home orchard and garden is typified in the horticultural display, a . bright centrepiece for which is piu/ided by an exhibition of cut flowers in the predominant colours of blue and white. Flowers, including roses and callas, are shown packed ready for airmail travel, and cut gladioli complete an artistic picture. The general display is embellished by photographs covering a wide range, and including student life at the college, and work on the sheep, dairy, poultry and horticultural properties.
