Nash, aiul the Minister of Transport, Air. O'Brien, attended. The connnittee had asked for 20 cases of oranges to be allocated which was the quota allowed the previous year but this was refused. The official said the unions for which the picnic was lield were those of the watersiders, ships' carpenters, foremen, stevedores, seanien and c transport d rivers. For today 's outing virttially all work on the waterfront ceased. It was stated that the Minister of Marketing, Ilon. F. L. Cullen, in a letter, had refused to grant oranges on tlie ground of tlieir acute shortage. He wrote that a fairiy large shipment had al-rived in Wellington but it had iilready been distributed with the exception of some held for hospitals and other institutions vvliich had a priority need for tliem.
