VARYING IDEAS ABOUT A GOVERNOR-GENERAL
SYDNEY, Jan. 27. Though all Australia is standing by for Ihe expected announcement of the appoiiitment of Mr, W. J. AfeKell, the Premier of New South Wales, as Gov-ernor-General of Australia, sections of tlie Press are still taking parting shots at the wisdom of tlie selection. The Sydney Telegraph announces tliis morning that a public opinion poll among 500 Sydney men and women of average groups showed that 75 jier cent. favoured an Australian as Gover-nor-General, but that 65 per cent. of these did not want a politician. Of the group who stated that tliey wanted an Australian to iill the position, 26 per cent. stated that thev had no objection to a politician, and 37 per cent. said that tliev wanted a fornier scrviceman. It is expected that the adverse comment will cease as soon as the appointmeut is announced, as Mr. MeKell will tlicn be Ihe King's represeutative.
