Review of Weekend Racing Cards

VL).

(SPECIAL— FROM

WELLINGTON. This Day. The weather conditions are still fine for the conclusion of the Wellington Racing Club's four days summer meeting at Trentham tomorrow. The track is still firm and fast and if rain does not intervene between now and tomorrow some smart times will again be recorded. A number of the horses which raced on the second and third days are feeling the effects of the hard going and will not wait for the final day.

The Trentham Stakes is a small but classy field, bringing together under weight-for-age such higlaclass performers as Golden Souvenir, Bruce, Beau le Havre and the champion mare of the Dominion, Soneri. Golden Souvenir has time and again proved his class in such classics, but tomorrow he will have to contend with the strongest opposition that has yet opposed hina at weight-for-age. Soneri showed on the track at Trentham yesterday that she has done a lot of work since returning to the fcracks after a well-earned rest. Beau le Havre, whose brilliancy is well known, is likely to be the favourite. Bruce has a stiff weight in the Summer Handicap and his owner might prefer to start hina in the weight-for-age event. If such proves to be the case L. J. Ellis, traiiaer and rider of Golden Souvenir and Bruce, will have to flnd riders for both his charges. After his excellent performance in running second in the Welliiagton Cup Broiefield will come in for strong support for the Summer Handicap. He is handily placed in the weights and if the hard Cup race has not aff ected him he should agaiia be seen to advantage. Merry Robin ran a good third in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap on' Anniversary Day and should improve on that tomorrow. Indian Gold, a fresh hoi'se, comes in laicely on 7.7 and is iaot without good prospects. Other prospects in the race, presuming Bruce starts in Trentham Stakes, are Signal Offlcer, Kerry Lad, Langue d'Or, Swift Quarry and Young Trent. Judged by his sterling effort against Da Vinci in the Telegraph Handicap, Theocritus will. be respected in the open sprint, the City Handicap, as also will Peter Gazelle and Derene. Da Vinci has a good horse's weight, but as he is a class above the others as a sprinter and a good weight-carrier, he should again be iia the forefront at the finish. Though he failed at the Ashhurst meeting on Wednesday, Specialist must not be taken too lightly on account of that failure. A fresh lightweight prospect is Donegal Bay, who is well forward. Handy fields are engaged for the opening day of the Pahiatua Racing Club's meeting " at Woodville i tomorrow. Ashhurst form might , prove a reliable guide here. At; Ellerslie the Auckland Racing Club will open its mid-sunanaer fixture. The coxacluding day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club will also take place tomorrow. Win and place betting will operate at all meetings.
