HIGH ORDER OF ATHLETES SEEN AT OTAKI
ANNIVERSARY DAY SPORTS A large crowd gathered at the Otaki Domain yesterday for the Otaki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's second post-war Anniversary Day sports meeting. Athletes were present from all parts of the Dominion and included several provincial champions. All events were keenly contested and many close finishes were witnessed. In some cases the handicapping was too severe for the scratch.men and in others not severe enough, but apart from this the meeting was an outstanding success. The events were run smoothly and great credit is due to the club officials on the excellent organisation of the fixture. The highlight of the day was- the exhibition high jumping by C. Borland, of Christchurch, who is the New Zealand champion in this particular branch of sport. He demonstrated the scissors, wester cut-off and the western roll jumps, and fully earned the spontaneous applause of the crowd. He executed these jumps perfectly and when ■ jumping in competition used the western roll. Another athlete of championship standard, G. Batten, also of Christchurch, pleased the crowd with his running and he had no trouble in winning the points award. The principal event of the day, the Whit MacLeod Memorial flve mile cycle, was won by R. Dutton, a former Wellington champion. He started on scratch and by taking a lap with W. Williams, also of Wellington, had soon overhauled the leaders. Dutton, in the last lap, cracked on the pace and several contestants were forced to drop out. The last 100 yards were fought out between Dutton and N. Allen, the • winner last year, but Dutton drew ahead and in a good finish won with two yards to spare.
