BARRAGE OF QUESTIONS IN COMMONS
i FLOGGING OF BRITISH TROOPS j Received Thursday, 11.30 a.m. j LONDON, Jan. 22. | Replying to questions in the 1 House of Commons, the Secretary ; for Colonies, Mr. Creech Jones, said ; that 73 British subjects — 15 Pales- 1 tine policemen, 49 members of the j British forc.es and 13 civilians — were murdered in Palestine last year. The authorities had been unable to convict the culprits of | these murders, beeause of the diffi- j culty of collecting exact informa- 1 tion through a lack of co-operation ' from the Jewish community. He ! was satisfied the military authori - i ties had all the necessary powers j to protect the lives of British subjects from terrorist activities. 1 Mr. Creech Jones answered aj barrage of questions from both sides of the House on the circum- • stances of the Palestine floggings. He said, in answer to a question as i to whether the troops had been 1 commended for their forbearance! and restraint in the face of wide- i spread provocation, that the Government had repeatedly expressed appreciation. He asked for notice on a question as to whether the soldiers concerned would be given any compensation.
