It is not known how these ! Ireakish trees came about, as the usual nikau is tall and straight ! with only one stem. This particular palm has no less than seven jtrunks, beginning about half-way : up the tree, and is standing just off ( the main highway at the Paraparaumu turn-off. Giant Rhubarb 1 With leaves measuring three feet ! across, a new species of rhubarb has been grown this year by a Levin gardener. One stalk of this unusua/- : plant, wliicii is no freak, tipped the i scales at one pound. These stalks, j though measuring flve inches in icircumference are just as palat|able, if hot mere so, than the j ordinary tyj)es. The name of this j. plant is "Giant Seedless," one | stalk of which makes a good meal i toi* the average family. I A Bride's Suilcase j A sad end to her honeymoon was ! experienced by a Christchur.ch • ' bride recently. When she was ' returning by car from Oxford via j Marshland, a suitcase containing Ihe choicest garments of her ! Lrousseau fell from the iuggage carrier. The loss was not noticed luntil the newly-weds arrived in j Christchurch. Although a reward jvcas ohere d the person finding the ; suitcase and returning it to the I nearest police station, the flnder has so far not put in an appearance. Thanks from Greece A Remuera resident who placed a hote in the pocket of her little girl's winter coat before sending it to Greece in response to an appeal for clothing over a year ago has now received a letter of thanks from a 17-year-old Greek girl, whose family received the coat. The letter was in good English but was addressed "Auckland, New Zealand, U.S.A.," suggesting that the recipients were under the impression that the assistance came from America. The postal authorities appear to have sent the letter direct to N.ew Zealand, however, as it arrived within li0 days ,of posting. The Greek girl expressed her- thanks, and said that her family were very poor, as their father had been killed in the fighting in Albania. They did not like asking for help, hnt were very grateful for anything sent,
