JUDGE'S HOMILY TO MAORIS ON CRIME
WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. Of nine prisoners for sentence today five were Maoris, remarkecl Mr. Justice Blair, in the Supreme Court, and that was a very distressing thing. "You spend far too much money, and when that's gone you go out and commit crime," said His Honour. "This calendar is not, of course, typi|cal, with more than lialf the prisoners Maoris, but the proporfcion of Maoris committing crirnes today is far too. high . altogether, Members of your raee used to give the police very little trouble, and took a consiclerable pride in that "act."
