MOUTOA SPILLWAY LEVELS

REPLY TO DRAINAGE BOARD'S REQUEST Advice on the levels, of spillways on the lower Manawatu River was received from the Manawatu Catchment Board at a meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board held at Palmerston Nor.th last Thursday. This followed a letter from the drainage board . to the catchment board- requesting that levels be taken to determine the height of Barber's spillway in relation to the Makerua bank. In reply the catchment board advised that levels were being taken by its assistant engineer., Mr. L. E. Daly. At the last meeting of the catchment board, the letter continued, it was resolved that a committee of engineers, consisting of Messrs. H. R. Farquhar, O. J. Dolan, A. R. Acheson (resident engineer, P.W.D.) and the board's engineer should investigate the position regarding the proposed spillway at Barber's, and bring down a report on stopbanking generally in .the MoutoaMakerua area. The board's engineer, 'Mr. Dolan, reported that regarding the Manawatu River the usual " quarterly report and summary of subsidised works had been made to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council. The contractor had completed the shifting of Whitanui bank, and had started operations on Seymour'si Further .e'rosion had taken place at all points damaged in the August flood. .
