RECORD TURNOVER
W. J. Broughton Rode Four Winners
The Wellington Racing CluTb's summer meeting was continued in fine weather and there was a record attendance to witness the Cup, which was won by the Riccarton-trained gelding, Bruce, which headed the Awapunitrained gelding, Broiefield, which is owned hy Messrs. H. C'. and L. H. Collinson, just a few yards from the post. Golden Souvenir, a stablemate of Bruce, was in third place, and Langue d'Or, a stablemate of Broiefield, was a close fourth. It was a great race and everything had a chance half a mile' from home. The day was remarkable, also, for the totalisator turaover, which was £257,578, compared with £211,984 10s on Cup day last year, and for the riding of W. J. Broughton, who piloted no less than four horses to victory. Detailed results are as under: — TE JM Ali UA H LGrll W EIG-I1T, £000; 1 mile 8 furlongs. I-1 DESERT FOXj 9.4 (A. Positions changed rapi|ly passing the half mile where Bedu Jewel held command from RockanUi, Master Raymond, Battle Chief. arid Desert Fox. The prder remained "the same entering the straight, but with ta furlong to go Desert Fox drew to the frout to win easily from Eobingay, wlfo finished well from the rear. Master Raymond just held off Blue Moon fpr third, and then earne Casilda, Mild Flutter and Roekanui. Indian Dawn Again Repeating her lirst day 's form, Indian Dawn scored a decisive victory in the Desert Gold Stakes from another favoured southerner, Privilege. Ladv Burford dwelt slightly at the start, and on settling down Rahine was the leader from Antibes, Privilege, Indian Dawn and -Perfect Peace. The leader continued, to set a solid pace racing to the turn from Privilege, Antibes, Indiah .Dawn and Lady Burford. Once s,in line for the judge Indian Dawn quickly worked to the froiit and she went on to score decisively from Privilege, who just as easily beat Cincture. Almost in line followed Perfect Peace and Lady Burford, with a gap back to Rahine, Sari and Antibes. OutstandiDg Performance The topweight, Brown Derby, regi.stered an outstanding performance to easily win the . Pencarrow Handieap as h'e was badly drawn at the barrier and appeared in a hopeless position at the turn. Revivre lost all chance at the start, and the early leader was Rhodesia from Lady Delight, Revolte, Patmos, Prcfa and Playtos. ' Rounding the turn Eung Tissa improved to sliow up^ on the outside of the leaders, but soon after commencing the run home Brown Derby came through brilliantly to liave the iSsue well in: hand over the fmal furlong. Passing the half -mile Dink's Own, Cairnforth and Young Trent were racing abreast of Foxvvyn, Gatterick Bridge, Hot Pursuit and Swift Quarry. Rounding the turn Dink's Own showcd the vvay to Svvift Quarry, Young Trent, Thornbridge and Foxvvyn with Bruce, Signal Oliicer and Golden Souvenir now witlrin striking distance. The
leaders weakened soon after straightening up aud Thornbridge and Signal Oliicer were lcft in front, but Broiefield took their measure at tfie distance aud looked all over the wiuuer until Bruce came with an overwhelming run -to lieat the Awapuni gelding in the last l'evv strides. Golden Souvenir battled on to hold oflE Langue d'Or for third and then followed Indian Gold, who received a bad run, Dink's Own, Signal Oliicer and Foxhaven. End-to-end Win The favourite Armont did not give liis supportcrs much cause for anxietv in the Ruapehu Handieap and, after taking charge inside the lirst furlong he was never aftcrwards headed to win easily. Armont was soon in front and he led into the back stretch by two lengths from Superium, Grifiin, Sheilwyn, Pandemondium and Sailor Boy, the rear being brought up by Culloden Moor. Passing the half- mile Sailor Boy moved up to join Armont, the pair being clear of Sheilwyn, Superium, Culloclen Moor, improving rapidly, and Winning Ticket. Armont was first to turn for home from Culloden Moor and Sailor Boy and he ,'he held on well in the run to the judge to win eomfortably from Matawenc who came home strongly to beat Beau Raide for second. Rosswood was practically in line next, followed by The Saddller, Pandemonium and Sailor Boy. A Photo -finisb
The favourite Da Vinci registered a briiliant performance to win the Tele- ■ graph Handieap. He was near the rear of the field in the early stages, but ' unwound a whirlwind finish at tho close to ruu down Theocritus in the last few strides. John Gay lost several lengtiis at the start, and Derene, Lady Nahleen, Awaroa Stream and New Deer were the most prominent racing down the shute. Derene, Awaroa Stream, White Cap and Peter Gazelle were cioselv bunciied as they swung into the straight, buc the leaders gave way at the distance to Theocritus, who looked all over the winner until Da "Vinci came with his irresisitable ehallenge over the last bit to get the deeision in a photo-iimsh. Peter Gazelle struggled on to hold ofi the fast-rtnishing Sibepy Fox for thiid, and then eame Peter Robinson, Derene and New Deer. Popular Success Ths thiia-year-oid How© ueored a
most popular victory wlien he - outclassed the opposition over the linal stages of the Anuiversary Handieap for a narrow, but decisive win. Gay Stroller and Opulent received the woi;st of the start, Theiolyil quickly taking up tfie running fioyn. Fortune 's Smile, ' Delinquent, Howe and Grill. Passing the half -mile Theiolyn was still bowiing , along ahead oi* Deliiiquent, F'oi l une's braih- and Al-Sirat, with Howe, Grill and Opuient most prominent of the Gthero. Opuient mo\ ed fcrvvard smartiy to head the ieaueis soon after entering the sci&ignc, but at the distance Howe lodged his ciaiin and went on ' to win well. Lowry Bav finished solidly to tafce third from Fortune 's Smile and then came AlSirat, G-t'iil a*Ld T^veim LighY
