Top Price to Southland Breeder
Outstanding woll bi'od Southdown rams connnandod high prices at. the coneluding' day of the stud sheep sale at Feilding yesierday when the Southland breeder, Mr. H. J. Andrew, of Maheno, North Otago, topped the market at 570gns for liis 'T'uiichbowl" stock. Last year 's highest price was 3Sl)gns and for 1945 it was 530ghs. Mr. Andrew 's average was just short of oOOgns for the six rams lie olfered and this was OOgns a head better than liis average price for the .194(5 sale. Of Ihe 101 Southdowns olfered 81 were sold utuler the lianuner at an average price of just short of lOOgns, the total realisations being S057gns. The bidding fluctuated soniewhat and was inclined to be slow but all high quality ranis produced good competition. After saies at .120 and .130 gns the (irst ''outsize" price came when the rams of B. Illston and sons, Hunterville, came under the hammer. The lirst of their rams sold at -lOOgns to Mr. N. Robinson, of Putaruru, and the next sold at 220gns and a third made 110 gns. The next best price was 2S0gns obtained by the estate of W. J. Gimblett, of Hastings, and this was followed with a sale at OOOgns for an outstanding rain olfered on belialf of the Canadian breeders, Don Head Farmers, Ltd., of Richmond Hil, Ontario, Canada. The rams olfered ou this account excited considerable interest since it. was the lirst oceavion on . whleh this important breeding establishment oi Canada lias been represented at the Feilding sale. Their slock is founded on the best of imporlod Bnglish blood and the sliipnients to Feilding represented a trial investment on the New Zeakuid market. The sclling was watched by Mr. Dale, Canadian Trade Coniinissioner, who appoarcd well satislied willi t lio rosult wtiich gave an average of 130gus for the six rams sold.
