track improving under sun

(Special — Froir

TRENTHAM, Noon Today. Weather conditions were dull but sultry for early morning work, but as the morning progresse'd the sky cleared and sunshine prevailed. There was little doing this morning, most of the" horses doing pace work, as those engaged tomorrow had their final gallops yesterday. As a result of the good weather pfevailing the going tomorrow will be perfeet. .Clocking the smartest mile of the morning Golden Souvenir earned a host of admirers. He trailed his two companions to the straight and then unreeled a burst of speed to narrowly lead at the post. The champion never looked better and although it is thought by every two out of three sportsmen here that Bruce will have the edge on him, I have no reason to change my view after today's gallop that Goiden Souvenir will be the hardest to beat in the Cup. As a result of the track becoming firm it was stated this morning that Hakim is a doubtful starter in the Cup. Hakim has been working well at Awapuni and all that is now required is for a soft track for Hakim to give of his best. Since changing hands it was decided by his new owner that Blanket would not start in the Anniversary Handicap tofiiorrow. There is nothing wrong with the horse. As a result of a smart trial Desert Fox has earned many friends for the Te Marua Highweight. A repetition of the trial gallop would give him a good chance. It was stated this morning that the reason for Derene's withdrawal from the sprint on the first day was a slight ktt'ack- of seasonaL trouble. She has completely recovered and will take'her plaice in the Telegraph Handicap ; tom'bl'i'qw/; ■ "She s went; smartly through: :hCr ! pa'ces,; and looks w^lfi ; 'j : ; ; FoxhaLvfen !' dapghti the eye 'SaS; -a] Cup prospect by his eXCeirehfi' trial.'
