SECOND DAY OF WELLINGTON MEETING

(SPECIAL— FROM
WELLINGTON, This Day. . The weather has cleared and the rain of Wednesday which left the track soft has dried out and providing it remains'fine the going will be fast for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting at Trentham tomorrow. The sky is clear this morning and the sun shining brightly. • There are several fresh horses engaged tomorrow, but first day's form in the minor events rnight prove fairly reliable. •
The Wellington Cup is going to prove the tit-bit event • of the meeting for it has drawn together the best class two-milers in the country. Wellington racegoers are strong for Bruce and it is on the cards that he will shade h\s stablemate, Golden Souvenir, as favourite on both machines. L. J. Ellis being unable to ride because of having two horses from his stable engaged in the Cup, C. T. Wilson will ride Golden Souvenir and W. J. Broughton Bruce. I am inclined to the view of South Islanders at the meeting that Golden Souvenir will beat Bruce at the distance. He is in the pink of condition and will certainly keep the opposition at Lheir best over the final two furlongs. The only pity is that he will not have the assistance of his reguiar pilot, L. J. Ellis, but Wilson is an experienced jockey and he can be relied on to follow out instructions jxplicitly. Langue d'Or is in much botter form than was the case at Ellerslie and I fully expect him to give a splendid account of his staying ability. Longsword looks fresh and fit after Saturday's race and jaithougli it is considered that the distance will trouble him he is, j nevertheless, not without prospects. j Foxwyn is a ■ grand stayer from [Auckland, but being a little fellow ! weight might trouble him over the Jlatter stages of the race. He has jthe tenacity and determination to light on. Hot Pursuit is also on the small side, but is in on a handy scale. He has yet to win over two miles. Foxhaven has improved considerably as^ he slowed in his final track gallop. He is very fit and can be expected to run a great race- tomorrow. In fact, his connections are confident he will go very close to, if not win. - Judging by shrewd opinions sxpressed" at Trentham yesterday Da' Vinci has, already won the Telegraph Handicap. He is. certainly a class sprinter as also is the tbp- | weight, Sleepy Fox. These two will jdominate the betting. Peter Robjinson looks fresh and well and periformed a'good trial. He is bxpected to show up tomorrow. . . Half-way down the weights is the : speedy South Island sprinter Derene. She caii'set and mahitahi a merry.pace 'uver six furlongs. It would notiSur1 prise to see her worry Da Vinci out of the thick end of the.;stake. Fancy is for Derene. Lightweight prospects are . . Lady Nalileen, Theoentus, and Awararoa\ Stream and New Deer. The last named is speedy and in good form, Betting will be win and place-. { Horses expected" to race promin- ! jntly are: | 1 1.10 — Te Marua High weight (11 j f urlcng.s ) — Battle Chief , Casilda, Desert Fox. i 11.55--Desert Gold Stakes (1 | mile ) — Indian Dawn, Privilege, jperfect Feace. i 12.40^ — Pengarrow Hack (7 furlongs i — -King Tissa, Frances, PlayItos. j 1.30 — Fitzherbert Handicap (6 j furlongs) — Lady Christine, Marilyn, j Faultina. ! 2.20— Wellington Cup (2 miles) — j Golden Souvenir, Bruce, Foxhaven. 3.10— Ruapeliu Hack (11 furlongs) — Winning Ticket, Newel 1 1'ost, Sailor Boy. ! 4.0- Telegraph Handicap (6 furllongs)— - Derene, Da Vinci, Peter I Robinson. | 4.50 — Anniversary Handicap (1 inile) — Howe, Gay Stroller, Opulent.
