NEA[?] 400 SHARKS MESHED

Since March 1 last, Captain C. R. Stewart Pty., Ltd., has meshed 380 iharks from Palm Beach to Cronulla, Australia, the Minister for Local Government (Mr. Cahill) announced. Many of the sharks caught were of a very dangerous type, the Minister said. When the contract expired on April 30, 1947, £7270 would have been spent in providlng this safety service. Total number of sharks- caught since meshing began in October, 1937, is nearly 4000. Meshing was suspended for about three years. during the war. Mr. Cahill said that provision of funds for meshing, together with the annual subsidv of £1000 granted to Iie Surf Life Saving Association was evidence of the Government's concern make the beaehes safe.
