CHIFLEY TAKES A HAND IN WATERSIDE DISPUTE

Clufley; lias intervened in tlie waterside dispute over the appearanc-e money and lioli■(lays with pay by inviting the secretary of tlie Waterside Workers' Lederation (Mr. J. £Lealy) to eonfer with Miuisters in "Cjanberra. The dispute lias threatened to preeipitate a general strike in all Australian ports. Mr. Healy has been authorised by his executive to tell Mr. Chiflev that all brauch-es of the Waterside Workers' Federation have been empowered to call a general sloppage if the claims for annual iioiidays . are not granted. The claim was dismissed recently by the Arbitration Couit. Warnmg From Miners' Le.aders. TlLe miners' Jeaders -have warned the Minister of Labour and Iodustry (Mr. ilainilton Kniglit) that unless meat suppj.ies are made availalile to tho miners stoppages are inevitaiile. The general secretary of tlie Miners' Federation .(Mr. (!. W. Grant) said. that unless tlie ininers were able to buy suffieieiit meat. it would be phvsicaJly impossible for them to carry on. The Aliuers' Federation considered that the (iovernuient should bring tlie master butchers mnartly to lieel and make them open tlieir shops. There will be tio miik strike in Sydney aecording to the unanimous deiVision by tlie executive of tlie Aiilk Zone Dairymen's Conncil, which decided to aeeept Ihe announcement made by Mr. Chilley that tlie existing subsidv would be increased by the equivalent of ld a gallon. The president of the council (Mr. L. C. Turton) said that the incre»se would total £240,000 a year, equal to nearly ."0-s a week to each of the 3400 produeers in the milk group. The iucrease would be retrospective to Jnnuary I. A mass meeting of 3,00 employees of Imperial Chemical industries of Australia and New Zealand, Ltd., who have been on strike for four months, will be called soon to diseuss proposals put forward liy the management. The dispute concerns a 10s a week disability allowanee claimed by the workers for working under "obnoxious conditions. " After the overtime ban liad been imposed by the union it was allegedly broken by the cle.rk unionists who amended the claims to £1 a week in crease.
