WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. The national couneil of the Waterside Workers ' Union met today and.adjourned after a brief session. ( The national executi've was instrueted to revietv aspects of the waterfront dispute and repoi't back to the eouneil tomorrow niorning. The president (Mr. H. Barnes) and the seeretary (Mr. T. Hill) said there was nothing at 'this stage to -report. Meanwbile the 40-houi' week policy continues. The conierence opened today in the Trades Hall, the primary purpose being a discussion of the policy to'be foMowed in the -dispnte. The proceedings, may properly be regarded as vital to the whole community, and the deiegates theniselves are well aware of the momentous nature of the eonferenee, which may have extensive effeets politicalfy and indnstrially. v The national president (Mr. II. Barnes) said the leng'th of the eonferenee was indefinite, and he did Tiof know whether there would be any public session or any public statementsHrom the .eonferenee. He did not think this was likely, bnt the; eonferenee would deeide the inatter. It was stated that th§ deiegates generallv approved of "Attack on the Workers," the pamphlet whieh sets' out the nnion's attitude to the dispute, and there was a strong- expeetation that the publieation would help toward an understanding by other unions, and hy the public, of the arguments presented bv.the union. The present intention is to distribute 110,000 copies, 50,000 being printed in Auckland and the reuiainder in Wellington.
