Canterbury's First Newspaper
Canterbury's first newspaper, the Lyttelton Times, was born in a small shed in Norwich Quay Lyttelton, 96 yeai's ago. The colonists decided that they would establish a newspaper in Canterbury before they left England and 7hey entrusted Mr. Ingram S"hrim.pton a printer, of Oxford, with the task. He risked £2000 of his own capital in the venture and shipped the plant, with which the newspaper was printed for the first fotir or five years, in the Cliarlotte Jane. The ship arriVed at Lyttelton on December 16, 1850, and a little more than three weeks later ih^ first issue was circulated in the seaport. The staff had been working day and night for nearly a week. The foUr ohtside pages were printed two days befole publication and the printing of the four inside pages was begun at five o'clock on the morning of publication, Jahuary 11, 1851.
