APFOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR DUNEDIN, Jau. 12. Twelve applications, all from Great Britain, have been received for the appointment of direetor of cancer research in Dunedin. The applications are at present being considered by a special committee set up iu Dunedin unuer the chairmanship of Professor E. D 'Ath. A linal seioction from the recommendations of that committee will be made by tlie central committee of the IjTew Zealand Braneh of thc British Cancer l Researeh Society, under tlie chairman ship of Sir James Elliott. It is expected that the nanie of tlie successful candidate will be made know later this month. The new direetor will be iu charge of the cancer researeh department and laboratories, which will be housed in the new bloclc of the Otago Medical School. He will require a number of assistants, but tliey will not be appointed till after his arrival in the Dominion. Equipment Ordered. Certain basic equipment has been ordered, but the special apparatus required will not be obtained till the hew direetor has been consulted. Sinee 1929, a sniall department studying cancer has been in existence at the Otago Medical School but some years ago its direetor, Dr. A. M. Begg, weut to Britain, and is now engaged at the Imperial Cancer Researeh Fund's laboratory in London. The New Zealand braneh of the British Cancer Campaign Society has contributed to the British funds since Dr. Begg joined the staff of the London "laboratory but, now- that a direetor is to be appointed to the cancer department at the Otago Medical School, the contribution will cease and be diverted to researeh- work in Dunedin.
