SUPPORT FROM FREEZING WORKERS AND RAILWAY WORKSHOPS

—Press Association

By Telegraph-

• WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. Delegates from branehes of tlie Waterside W orkers ' Union in all parts oi: 'New Zealand will assemble tomorrow for. a special urgent meeting' of the national council of the union. This meeting' may last several days and it is expected to make vital decisions affectiug the waterfront dispute. ' Stopwork meetings of the workers at the Ngahauranga freezing works, the Gear Meat Company's works and the Hiitt railway workshops were held today dt iwhich addresses were given by national offieials of the'- Waterside Union, and support was given to the claims of the union. There *is no evidence yet to suggest any change of policy by tlie'New Zealand- Waterside Workers' Union with respect to the resumption of normal hours of work and overtime on the waterfront. Nor is there any real ground for the hope that tomorrow 's extraordinary meeting of the national couneil of the union will achieve any substantial amendments to the policy now being followed. - Interest therefore turns to the extraordinary conference of delegates from all unions to the Federation of Labour, to be held 011 January 21. It can be at once assumed that at the conference a formula to avoid strikes will be sought. The workers' representatives, including the Waterside Workers' Union, will be asked to settle disputes wherever possible by negotiation.
