I The U.S. Navy pepartment announced that six survivors of the Antarctic plane crash have safely reached the Pine Xsland which is the seaplane tender attached to the Byrd expedition. The survivors had to trudge eight miles from the plane wreckage to the stretch of open water where the rescue plane awaited. Five had suffered only minor injuries, but the sixth was more seriously hurt and had to he dragged on a sled across . the ice. The bodies of the three dead were left beside the burned plane. The survivors stated that their' aireraft grazed a peak of snow and then exploded while flying just ahove the ground. It is helieved that friction from contact with the snow ignited the petrol ih the tank in the b.ottom of the plane which disintegrated with the wings and engines falling off and the fuselage breaking apart. The survivors include Captain Henry Caldwell, commander of the Pine Island, who accompanicd the flight as a supernumerary.
