WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. The Minister of Einance annouileed today that the New Zealand "Gdvernment had been approached by the United Kingdom Government witli a proposal that certain quantities of New Zealand butter should be ..diverted to Canada in order to help that Dominio'h overcome its temporary interhal shortage. - "It is the joint policy pf the four Commonwealtli Govefnments — the United Kingtiom, . Canada, . Australia and New Zealand — to supply to the United Kingdbm the maximum quahtity of surplus foodstuffs from- the three Dominions, " said Mr. N ash, ' ' but they are at the same .timo 111 agceernent that this policy niay be a.dj.usted from time to time to meet any tenqxorary shortage wliich may occur iu any of these couutries. It is well known that New Zealand 's surplus buttei is made available to the United Kingdom under longterm contracts. Canada and Australia are doiug their utmost to help Britain by supplying her with available surpluses. "In the case of Canada, however, temporary difficulty in lnaintaining the ration witliin that Doniinion has arisen which the United Kingdom considers it desirable and necessary to adjust. The decision of the Uiuted Kingdum Government to divert sux>plies will not detraet from the need for New Zealand to continue its policy of xiroducing, sav ing and exportmg the niaximuni quantity of butter in order n.ot only to assist the people 0+ Britain .but also to play our proper part iii over.couiing the world food crisis. "
