LONDON'S BAFFLING TRAFFIC PROBLEMS
( Knoi-ial C'orrosnondont.)
Received Thursday, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 9. Travelling facilities and traffic are two problems worrying the London authorities at the nioment. Every day 838,000 people travel to and from work and 68 per cent. of them leave for liome in the hour between 5 and 6 p.m. Nearly 150,000 arrive before 10 a.m. daily at three of the main line stations. In order to investigate the possibility of introducing a spread-over of working hours a committee of nearly 100 persons has heen appointed. They represent husiness firms, Government offices, chamhers of commerce, trade unions and trade assoeiations. The congestion is not only on the railways hut also on the roads. Traffic hold-ups lasting half an hotu* are now common in London 's West End. Many plans and proposais have heen made to improve the position and there are frequent agitations to get something done.
