CAR WRECKED AT CROSSING

VEHICLE STALLED ON LINE AND HIT BY TRAIN A saloon car owned and driven by Mr. F. G. Clarke, of Lower Hutt, was wrecked at the Roslyn Road level erossing, Levin, yesterday, when it stalled on the line and was struck by the southbound New Plymouth express at about 4 p.m. Nobody was injured. Mr. Clarke, who was the sole oceiipant of the vehicle, was driving into Levin. On the erossing, which has an uphill gradient when apprbached from this direction, the car stalled in a rut at the side of the road, with the rear portion on the rails. While attempting to get the car out of the rut and elear of the line, Mr. Clarke heard the whistle of the approaching train, and ran back in an endeavour to stop it. In this he was unsuccessful, and the train struck the vehicle with a severe impact, throwing it into the cattle stop and a teiegraph pole. The train was slightly delayed as a result of the accident.
