: FIEST MEETING OF THE TEAR ; The first meethig of the Shannon Borough Council ior 1947 was held on Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Mr. R .E. Downes) presided and those presenb wcre Crs. R. JFt. Lind, J. A. Roacli, II. Aitchison, W. C. Higgie, J. Curran and E. Perry. An apology for absence was received from Cr. C. G. Wishart. The Mayor made referenee to i the untimely passing of Cr. W. . Clayton. Mr. Downes stated tliat | Cr. Clayton had served as a counclllor slnce 1931 and held the posi- ! tion of Deputy Mayor and chair- ' man of the librarv and building j committees. "Cr. Clayton was an j outstandlng and popular man," said the Mayor. "He always api proached his work without paro- ' chial or sectional narrowness. His i passing is a great loss to both the council and the town generally, for Cr. Clayton worked ceaselessly for the good of the town and was always a willing helper whenever his services were required. The sports i bodies cf the district would also j suffer ioss through the passing of J Cr. Clayton," concluded Mr. i Downes. The town clerk was' directj ed to convey the Mayor and CounI cillors' deepest sympathy to Mrs. j Clayton and family." A motion of I sympathy was carried in silence. J It was proposed by Cr. Curran : that Cr. R. R. Lind be appointed Deputy Mayor. This mption was carried. Cr. Lind extended his thinks to the Mayor and councillors for the trust they placed in 1 hira in appointinc him to the posilion and stated that he would endeavour to carry out the duties to the best of his ability. The motion proposed by Cr. Lind that Cr. J. A. Roach be appointed chairman of the building and library committees met with the approval of the council. Cr. Roach extended his thanks for the appointment. It was agreed that Cr. Aitchison be ap])ointed to lill the vacancy in the finance committee. It was proposed by Cr. Curran that Mr. II. L. Norris be asked to acc.ppt tlie position as councillor. This motion was carried by the council. Noti/ications from the Comniissioner of Transport with regards to the Lssue of niotor drivers' liccnses and from the Medical Oflicer of Health with regards to fcgulations re wrapping of bread and the shortage and labelling of meat pickling preparations' Were.'rbce'i'vfid. This matter was also referred to the borough foreman. With regards to the proposed purchasing by tlie couiicil of a section adjoining the borough. property in Plinirner Terrace, the Und.er Secretary of tlie Departnienl of InternaJ AfTairs advised that a copy of tlie 110 lice for publioation had been forwarded and affcer the expiration of the period ailowed for the receipt of objections the application will be. further considered. Tlie aetion takou by the town clerk in endeavouring to arrange the necessarv finance was endorsod by the council. It was agreed that a quotc be obtained for the painting of the Municipal Buildings and the spouting and down pipe on the buildings be repaired. Tlie health oflicer was asked to inspeet the sanitary dump and it was decided to ! carry out rcoairs to the verandah at the council's house in Stout Street. Accounts amounting to £201 4s 8d were passed for payment.
