, Gunn Beaten By Bold

By Telegraph-

t "C CHRISTCHURCH , Jan. 6. The "defeat" of J. :AV. Gunii (Aueklaiid), third ranked player in New Zealand,. by.- the fast-f&oted Hntt ■ Yalley pUyer- . O. M.- -Boldi- w^as . the surprise of the seaond day. of. .the. .New Zealand lakn tennis championships at Wiiding Park. It was a day of iong and welL: contested matehes but unfortunately they had to be played on courts slowed and soalied by heavy overnight rain and were oecasiohally interrupted by further showers. Today's matehes reduced the field in the inen's singles to 1(5 and Gunn is so far 'the only casualty anion'g the seeded players exeeptiug C. Angas who lia'd to default. No women 'a singles matehes were played today and 16 are loft in this event also. Bold's win over Gunn was largely the result of tenacity and greater fitness. The further the match went the less likely did it appear that Gunn would win. The tall Auekland player started off at a line paee,. serving strongly, kecping Bold on the chase for deep drives into the corners and frequently eoming to tlie net to volley Bold's returns for winners. The seeond set was a different story. A few mistakes wh'en foreiug the paee eaused Gunn to slow down his game the rallies lenglhened, and as they did so Bold won more and more of Lhem. Gunn appeared to have great trouble iu dealiug with Bold'a heavily slieed ! backhand which, biting into wet turf, I l'requenLly rose no more tlign a' few inches. Bold exeelled in dillieult re* trieving, eo'nstuutly produeiqg perfeet lubs when uuder pressure. Perliapa the beat stroliing of Ihe day waa seen in Ihe mateh iu wluch N. V.
