ASHBURTON, Jan. 0. Tlie atea of the Ashburton, countv', bounded by the railway and the sea and the Hinds and Ashburton rivers, experienced a most severe liailstorin on Saturday afternoon. Crops worth thousands of pounds were damaged. The hailstones varied in size from marbles to golf bulls, with some as large as tennis bulls. Residents of several years' standing cannot remember a similar visitation. R-yegrass and burley crops are a complete Joss in the worst aft'ected area, and oats in an advanced state suffered. Turnips and rape were cut about, but wheat stood up fairly well. In the Ashburton borough slcvlights and glass liouses suffered severely.-
