MAN SWEPT OFF ROCK

AUCKLAND, Jan. 3. While fishing at Piha, a holidaymaker was swept off a rock by a roller and drowned. He was Mr. Walter William George Pearce, aged 34, of Point Chevalier. He leaves a wife and three young children. With two companions, Mr. Pearce was fishing from a rock on the seaward side of Rabbit Island at the southern end of Piha beach, about 11.30 a.m. He went down the rock to release a sinker caught in a erevice and was engulfed by a roller which swept him into the water. For a few moments he managed to cling to some lcelp but the iiext wave carried him away and he was not seen again.
