Received Fridayy 9.l:u p.m. MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. England 's iiuiin'gs 'which looked to be full of runs On Tliursday, ended 14 runs short of Australia 's total, due principally to batting failures on a good Avicket. Hamrtiond and Confpton, the t avo stars, once again failed to sIioav Test form and it was left to the YArd-ley-lkin partnership oi 113 to pull the ■ innings round. Doolaud, the legspinner, was most successful but Avas given every chance. Johnson, the secoud Test star, had less than two overs today. Ideal eonditions again prevailed for the third day of the Test. England 's stocks sluniped Avhen tjiree Avere out in the first liour. Ed-J'icli added four and there seems a doubt about the correctness of tlie l.b.w- decision. From the dressing- ro om canie tlie story that Edrich hit tlie ball. Conipton began confidently with a deliglitful four to fine leg oft' Toshack who Jater dismissed him l.b.w., Conipton allowing the ball- to hit his pads. Hainniond swung Toshack powerfully for four but avus dismissed Avith a sharp catch. At the otlier end Washbrook Avas struggling, liiaking six in the flrst hour. He got little farther, snicking oue from Doolaud avIio was flighting and turning cleverly. Yardlev Avas aggressively confldent and quickly reache.l ten. Ikin, narroAvly escaping a catch close in, was mak mg lieavy weather. Yardley and Ikin fought liard for a reeovery after luncli. Yardley was especiallv conlident, hitting cleanly and reacliing 22 iu 1(5 minutes, and Ikin 2 in 40 minutes. The score Avas 200 after 285 minutes. L'kin moved along, takiug seven in one over. Ile survived tlie neAV ball onslaughts and followed with tivo fours olf Toshack, oue streaky and the other a great square cut. Ikin took over the scoring role, batting attractively off the back foot. Yardley, batting 97 minutes, contributed 50 to the A*aluable 100 runs partnership of 105 minutes. Yardley looked- set when bowled trying a sweep to leg. He scored (32 in a total batting time of 123 nunutes. Two overs later Ikin mistimcd a swing. Yoce went flrst ball. Bedser cracked Dooland for a graud four witli an off drivfc. Evans nuide a rash shot. The last Avicket added 27 runs and England 's innings closed only 14 behind Australia 's total. Bedser gave an example of flne battiyi-g. The Australian openiug batsmen luitted soundly without loss. The attendance today was 53,851. Scores: — • ENGLAND. First Innings.
