MAROONED ON AN ICE-FLOE
Received Thursdav, 7 p.m. ' OTTAWA, Dee. 28. Two Flying Fortresses took oft from Massachusotts for the Lower St. Lawrence River to parachute mptpr-driven lifeboats to three nien who liave lieen marooned for more than 48 hours on an iee-floe. They Avere aboard a Quebec Airwavs plane whieh made a forced landing 011 the floe 011 Alondav afternoon, broke tlirougli Ihe ice and sank. One man disappeared soon after landing. Three were resoued by flying boat last night. The men still marooned are only one mile from land but rescuers canhot get near them because of rough water and grinding ice. The lirst lii'elioat dropped by a Flying ForLresa capsized as soon as it hit the water. One of the tliree mcn, however, paddlod from the floe in a dinghy near him. reaclted another floe whieh swept elose into the shore and enabled him to land.
