FERRY STRIKES ROCK IN FOG
SVDN1CY, Der. 26. In heavv fog late la.st n.ight the Manly ferry Dee M'hy, carrying ahout lTitl) passengers, struek a rock in Obelisk Bay, George's Head, jnst inside the liarbour niouth. There trere n.i ctisyfallies, but many women passengers hecanie alarmed and a mimber liad to he rest rained„ from jumping overhoa rd. The passengers reniained in the hrightly lit ship tuiti] the earlv hotii'S of this morning, wlien two otlier ferries law alongside and took the passengers olf. Tugs later refloated ihe Dee Why 011 the rising tide and towed her to a berth in Neutral Bay. When the ferry struek, she was travelling at three knots. Smldenly a difl' loomed out of the fog and she grounded with a loinl crash, whieh was heard by naval personnel stationed nearby. A naval reseue party was fjuickiy organised. Ropes were passed from the ferry to the shore and within a 1'ew ininutes the first of several fnen from tlie ferrv was ashore. A man and four vouths negotiated the rope hand over hand. All the ferries were later suspended because of the fog. This entailed a heavv drain on the tram and bus ser vices to ilanly.
