RECORDED AT KELBURN.
WELLINGTON, Dec. 23. A pronounced earthquake was recorded by the seismograph at the Dominion Observatory, Ivelluirn, at 7.31 a.m. 011 Saturday, followed by a second sliake, apparently -from the sarne direction, at 10.32 o'elock on Baturday niglit, The acting director of the observatorv, M r. B. ('• llayes, said today tliat tlie earthquake was among tlie largest that luive been recorded at Kelburn from a distance. A preliminary assessment of the reeord places the centre of the disturban.ee about 0000 miles 'frd'fn Wellington. Mr. Hftyes said'tlmt the movements continued to be recorded for four and a half hours. He happened to be tliere at tlie time, aud lie thought it would be the earthquake recorded in the cable messages. An untisual fact eoncerning the pr.esent earthquake in Japan is that it a,ppears to liave been to some extont anticipated. A cable message received 011 December 5 stated that seismologists had noticed a disturbing similarity between an earthquake which shook .lapan on December 2 and tlie series ot disturbances which preceded the 1925 disaster. The total casiialties in Japan in 1923 were 99,331 killed, 43,4 76 missing, and 105,733 injured.
