The sprint event, the Fitzherhert Handicap, was won brilliantly hy Beau le Havre, who was rated one of the hest two-year-olds m the north last season. Backers were i'airly well on the mark during the day and there were no outstanding surprises. Conditions were excellent and there was a good crowd present. The totalisator handled £73,072 10s compared with £61,129 10s on Boxing Day last year. Favourite Scores The Waikato-traiued Merriful fully juslilied Ihe solid support uccorded liiin in the Tokomaru Hurdles llundicap by winning very easily. Foreigu I'oin and (Jharles Hdward were elimiuated at the first feuce, and passiug the stand the first time Gay Flame was tlie leader from Merriful, Mary Jo and Greek Dancer, the rear being brought up by Red Glare. A Winning Bracket The Maideu i'late was run in two divisions and the bracketed pair Gay Sport and First Act won their respec tive divisions to return a double ligure dividend. In the lirst division Luminate soon reached the front and made the pace to the turn from Ginereous, Aftou Water, Sunshine Bay, Gay Sport and ArvadaJe. Commencing the linal niu, Ginereous gained the upper hand of Luminate, but was unable to withstaud a challenge from Gay .Sport who bcat the favourite narrowly. Luminate hehl ol'f Afton Water for third, and then eame Arva dale and Ilomespun. Silver Mascot was smartest to begin in the second division, but passing the half-mile First Act took over from Silver Mascot, the pair being clear of Coronara, Sunburn, Alunmus and Be gowned. There was no change in the order entering the straight and, although Sunburn lodged a claini, First Act liehl on well over the linal furlong to beat him decisivoly. Silver Mascot was a t'air third ahead of Aristea, Coronara, Variant Night, Sheilwyn and Arctic Circle. An Easy Win The Xursery Handicap provod a duel between the favourite Langspiel and Blithe Spirit. but over the linal stage.the Trentham-trained tilly linished much too well to win comfortabiy. Lauspiel soon reached the front, bui Blithe Spirit joined issue passing tln half-niile, the pair being six lengths clear of Treneere, Revelate, Roblvn and Full of Fun. The leaders hehl a Ijig advantage into the straight autl after a short tussle, Blithe Spirit soon gained the ascendancy to score going awuy. Lanspiel beat Marilyy, wlm linished solidly, by a wide niurgin for second, and then followed Full of Fun, Kumari, who struck trouble early, Meteorina and Marabeau. Outstayed Opposition After being always well placed, the favourite L'ersuade linished on in gre-n style over the linal stages of the Tararua Handicap to win easily from Moutoa Lord, who was forced over a good deal of ground throughout the runniug. On settling down Tortago was the pacemaker from Newel l'ost, Winning Ticket. Rotlmie and Czarina, but entering the back straight Fersuade moved up to follow the leader, and then eame Newel l'ost, Winning Ticket, Mesalliance and Moutoa Lord. Passing the half-mile Tortago conliiiued to make play from Fersuaile, with Mesalliance, Czarina, X ewel Post, Kothniv and Lord Moutoa followiug. l'ersuade took the measure of the leader soon after entering the straight, was wa> not troubied to liold oll' Moutoa Lord, who linished fast wide out. Thomson who saddled up the lirst and secbnd horses, Saludos, the bottor backed of the pair, outstaying Broielield over the closing stages for a convinciug victory. Lowry Bay took up the roie of pao;malcer, and led past the stand the lirst time from Saludos, Top Shot, Broielield. Longsword and Silver liod, the rear being brought up by IneJine. Going down the back Lowry Bay was showing out clear from Top Shot and Saludos, with Broielield, Silver Jiod, Flving Ace and Longsword followiug iti a bunch. Rounding the turn Yasda moved i'orward smartly to follow

Specialist into the straight, with Voltaic, Lady Xahleen and Beaht le Havre in close order. Concluding Event The favourite division fought out the finish of the concluding event, the Grandstand Handicap, the verdict going to Mcrry Robin by the narrowest of margins from the Auckland Cup i-andidate Laugue d 'Or, who lost no f'riends by his defeat. Theiolyn, Stonv Broke, Langue d'Or and Mcrry Robin were the most prominent early, but travelling into the back stretch Theiolyn went into a clear lead from Sparkling Lady with Merry Robin, Stonv Broke, Delinquent and i Matador followiug in close order. Passing tlie half-mile Sparkling Lady, Merry Robin; Stonv Broke, Tremello and Langue d'Or closed 011 the leader and approaching the straight the field was well bunehed.
