ABOUT 500,000 JAPS HOMELESS Received Monday, 11 a.m. TOKIO, Dec. 22. The toll of damage from the earthquake and tidal wave is still moimting. The latest compilations show that 946 are dead, 1036 injui'ed and 96 missing, while 39,201 buildings, mostly homes, were destroyed or damaged. About 500,000 Japanese are homeless in freezing" temperatures. A total of 2195 vesseis were wrecked or driven ashore. The disrupted communications are still preventing accurate compilation of the casualties and damage. British occupation forces headquarters at Hiroshima report that several British . soldiers were injured on Shikoku Island. American aviators, flying over the devastated areas, report that thousands of Japanese, driven from their homes, are huddled on the beaehes to avoid the fires whieh followed the earthquake. They also report that Kushimoto is three-fourths eovered by water. Tanabe and Seto are badly damaged in general. At Shingu half the town was destroyed and the inhabitants had to blast a row of houses as a fire break.
